Ten minutes later, they set off. The snow continued to fall, but not as heavily as it had earlier. It never ceased to amaze Griffin how snow changed everything. Nothing looked the same, and the pristine white was a sight to behold. Annie played peekaboo with him over Emmaâs shoulder. Bittersweet memories assaulted him as he remembered how Bobby had loved the snow from the time he was Annieâs age. How different Griffinâs life would have been if his son had lived. Heâd probably still be living in Chicago, working long hours and putting his career first. He missed his son deeply, and he wished Bobby were here with him right now so he could be a different father.
Annie held her arms out to him, and he took her from Emma. She smacked his cheeks with tiny gloved hands and laughed then tilted her face to the sky and opened her mouth.
Cassie chucked Annie under the chin, and her laughter sent warmth coursing through him that no amount of hot coffee could accomplish. âJust like your mama. Love the snow.â
Annie giggled and squirmed in his arms.
Sam hit a bump and drew another delighted laugh from his daughter.
They headed west toward town so that Luella could check on the Beauty Bowl, and Annie snuggled against Griffinâs chest, her pudgy arms wrapped around his neck. Her breathing slowed and evened out, and he realized sheâd fallen asleep. What would it be like if he and Cassie had a baby?
He looked at Cassie and found her staring at Annie with something akin to longing in her eyes.
She met his gaze, and the warmth there kindled a yearning for more than sex. She was the woman he could start over with, build a new life with. Sure it came with children, but that didnât mean they couldnât add one or two more. One question that haunted him. Was he a changed man? Would he be there for Cassie when she needed him?
Annie stirred, and wide blue eyes fluttered open, full of innocence and trust. Her mouth began working, and within a minute or two her head craned around as she searched for Emma. When she saw her mother, she reached out to her. Griffin handed her back and felt an immediate loss.
âItâs hard to let her go, isnât it?â Cassie asked.
He nodded, his emotions too raw to speak.
Cassie studied him, the snow blurring his vision of her.
Griffin sensed there was a dual meaning behind her words and a moment later he was certain when she asked, âBecause it reminds you of Bobby?â
Griffin nodded but didnât elaborate. âI wish I deserved a second chance.â
She brushed a gloved hand across his cheek. âYou deserve it all. You were the best father you knew how to be.â
If only that were true. The fact was heâd failed his son, but there was nothing he could do to change that. He had to find a way to live with it, and he was determined to try because heâd found the one woman who was perfect for him in every way.
